Welcome To Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, which are a group of seven major islands and six smaller ones situated in the Atlantic Ocean between 60 - 190 miles off the north western coast of Africa.

Flights to Lanzarote from most UK airports take around 4.1/2 hours, landing at the Arrecife International Airport, which is almost midway along the east coast between the resorts of Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen.

Arrecife Airport is a large modern facility that serves both scheduled domestic flights within the Canary Islands as well as the charter flight market throughout all of Europe.

It's fair to say that on most days of the week the airport is busy, however to alleviate some of the pressures and frustrations of visitors, in recent years a second terminal has now been built.

This new building is dedicated solely to international flights and is built over two floors, with Departures being on the upper floor and Arrivals on the lower floor.

The original building was then totally refurbished and now serves as the arrival and departure point for domestic flights.

Once you have cleared Customs Control and collected your luggage, there are always large numbers of taxi waiting outside of the arrivals hall, although during busy periods you should also be prepared to stand and wait for the next one to become available.

Taxis on Lanzarote do represent good value for money by European standards, and can instantly be recognised as being the large eggshell/white cars with a large red stripe on each front door.

One thing that you should be aware of is a standard taxi on the island is only licenced to carry a maximum of 4 passengers plus a "reasonable" amount of luggage, so for larger groups of travellers, or those with special needs, it is our recommendation to make provision for a pre-booked taxi to be waiting for you at the airport, and clearly specify at the time of booking that a larger, or specially adapted, vehicle is needed for the journey.

Originally the Canaries were only a winter sun destination, but the combination of warm sunshine and fantastic modern holiday development, has put the islands on the map 12 months of the year.

Almost one third of the island is covered by the Timanfaya National Park, which is a spectacular lava flow that was formed by a series of volcanic eruptions during the 18th and 19th Century.

Volcanologists still recognise that Lanzarote is considered to be "active", although even with the best technology available to them, it still remains impossible to predict with any accuracy when the next eruptions are likely to occur.

Costa Teguise Playa Blanca Puerto del Carmen
Costa Teguise Playa Blanca Puerto del Carmen
The purpose built resort of Costa Teguise is part of the municipal district of Teguise and is almost midway along the north east coast of Lanzarote, some 6 miles or 10km north of Arrecife and the island's international airport.

Although being a purpose built tourist resort, considerable care has obviously gone into the planning and general layout of the town, and its wide traffic free promenade and broad tree lined avenues make getting around quite easy and pleasurable..

The resort of Playa Blanca was once a small residential fishing village on the south west coast of Lanzarote. However, the demand for holiday beds has seen the village grow into a purpose built holiday development.

The impressive Marina Rubicon at the heart of Playa Blanca provides moorings for almost four hundred vessels up to a maximum length of 22 metres, and has on more that one occasion been described by visitors, as being "the best in the Canary Islands.

Originally a small fishing village along the southern east coast of Lanzarote, over the last 30 years the resort of Puerto del Carmen has grown to become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Canary Islands.

Puerto del Carmen has almost 6 kilometres of golden sandy beaches, with everything on hand to enjoy your holiday in the sun, including watersports, glass bottom boat trips, as well as countless shops, bars and restaurants along the Avenida de Las Playas.

Puerto Calero Matagorda Playa de los Pocillos
Puerto Calero Matagorda Playa de los Pocillos
The chic and exclusive resort of Puerto Calero is part of the municipal district of Yaiza on the south east coast of Lanzarote, approximately 2km south of Puerto del Carmen and 10km from the Arrecife International Airport.

Construction of the marina began almost 25 years ago now when the developer José Calero first recognised the potential of this part of Lanzarote, with the intention of creating an exclusive marina, residential area & golf course.

Matagorda is one of Lanzarote's newest and most modern tourist resorts, with most of the area only being developed in the early 1990's to accommodate the increasing demand for holiday accommodation on the island.

In recent years development funds from the European Union have been used to create a wide traffic free promenade connecting Matagorda to Playa de los Pocillos and Puerto del Carmen some 3km to the south.

The purpose built resort of Playa de los Pocillos is, for all intents and purposes, a suburb of the much larger resort of Puerto del Carmen, which is part of the municipal district of Tias along the southern east coast of Lanzarote.

During the day, or early evening after dinner, it is a very pleasant stroll into Puerto del Carmen, although for those simply wishing a night out, a taxi ride is obviously much quicker and costs around 3 - 4€ each way.
